THE AGENCY: CHAPTER ONE
Lauren dodged a bullet, and ducked, getting ready for another round of challenges. “Ms. Bield,” a voice over the intercom crackled, “Come on out, you have a message.” Panting, she stood up, while the machines in the background powered down. Her short, brown, curly locks bounced as she quickly exited the battle practice arena. She prepared to open the door, but it quickly swung open instead. Before her stood a large man, 6’6 with bulging arm muscles and a sturdy jaw. His look was intimidating at least, but his dark green eyes looked down at her kindly. “Sorry, L. I’ll use the next one down.”
Lauren quickly sidestepped him, “It’s fine Derrick. I was leaving anyway, I have a message.” She resumed her fast-paced route. He called to her from down the hall, “How many times do I have to tell you? Call me D!” Emotionless, she kept walking. The sound of her high heeled footsteps echoed throughout the hall. Otherwise it was deathly quiet. Only she and Derrick were willing to wake up for 4a.m practice.
The walls glowed deep blue, while the ground she walked on glowed a blinding snow white. Only trained eyes could see in this light. Her thigh-high orange boots stood out from her surroundings. She wore black, tight, leather short shorts and a black silk flowy top, backless. Her grey eyes were stormy and rarely showed any emotion but passion, the angry kind. A left turn, followed by a right, finally brought her to her destination. She stood at a dead end, “General, it’s me. Bield, agent 32, ID,” she was cute off when the wall slid open to reveal a large sitting room. All was white; the only real color in the room was now her boots.
“Ms. Bield, we know who you are. We don’t have to go through the procedure every time.” Lauren bowed her head, “Understood, General Ericson.” Next to the general, on the couch, was a tall thin man with almost-red hair. He sat awkwardly as if he didn’t really want to be there. “This,” the general gestured at the man, “is Mr. Parks. He is the one who delivered your “oh-so-important’ message. Ms Bield, who are you to be taking messages? This is the most top-secret agent academy in the world, Ms. Bield. In. The. World. Now, if this was any other student we were talking about…” he let his threat hang in the air.
“But it isn’t. Where is the letter?” she turned to the man sitting on the couch. He awkwardly stood up, reaching his full height of 6’1. He wasn’t burly, but he had lean muscles rippling across his arms and a firm jaw with slightly pink lips. At that moment, those lips were set into a thin line. He fumbled with his suit pockets, trying to find the letter. “Fed-Ex takes a shorter time retrieving a letter than you!” Lauren coldly uttered, still emotionless. His head whipped around, his fathomless hazel eyes looked out at her, “If you have any complaints, take them up with me, but NOT now.” Lauren was startled, but quickly regained her nonchalant expression. No one ever ordered her around, except family and the general. Mr. Parks finally found the letter and wordlessly handed it to her.
She slowly took it, but quickly grabbed his wrist and twisted it up. A large L.B calligraphy tattoo shone on the inside of his wrist. “Jeremy…I thought you looked familiar.” She let go of his hand, and he pulled it away, still without a word. “Y-you know him?” the general asked in surprise. “We were sweet-…we…we dated in high school,” said the suddenly flustered Jeremy. He shook his almost-red hair out of his eyes. “I see,” the general looked down at the spotless, blinding floor. Lauren still hadn’t looked away from Jeremy. Her piercing gaze made him uncomfortable, he shifted his weight. They had stopped dating at the end of junior year, and had lost contact ever since. Junior year was 5 years ago, and most of that tome she had spent away from the real world, training at the Agency. But the wound he had left her with still hadn’t healed
On the night before prom, he had hit her with a bomb. He was moving…to California. Away from New Jersey, away from her. They had been going steady since freshman year; no one knew her like he did. She loved him more than anyone else in the world, excluding her twin sister Anne. That night, he swore an oath that he would come back for her, then he had tattooed her initials onto his wrist. A week later he was gone. She had waited, never even thought of another man. But he never came. Anne was her comfort, she shared Lauren’s pain, felt it as if it were her own. They had an almost telepathic connection that the girls had thrived upon. But soon, it started to bother Lauren, she was afraid of loving anyone else. Scared of being hurt again. She ran away from home, leaving it behind forever…until now.
As she read the letter addressed to her, Lauren felt her blood run cold. Yet, she still showed nothing to the outside world. “Well? What is it?” General Ericson demanded. “My twin sister…Anne…is missing,” she calmly replied as if these things happened everyday. Jeremy frowned, “You’ve gotten colder, Ren.” She echoed his words from long ago, looking straight into his eyes, “These things happen; some are out of your control. This is one of them.” He looked as if he had been slapped across the face. She turned away and calmly walked out the door, leaving a stunned silence behind her.
